8 situations the simulator tests for you

You do not need to guess what could happen. Each situation is tested at the age it is most likely to hurt, using the numbers below in today's dollars. You can change the age on the results page.

  • Normal retirement

Life goes to plan. We check if your savings and CPF LIFE payouts can pay for 80% of your current spending from the day you stop work until your likely lifespan.

  • Critical illness

A serious illness such as cancer, heart attack or stroke. We use a S$150,000 treatment bill plus 3 years off work.

  • Disability

You can no longer work. We count the pay you lose until retirement plus S$1,500 a month of care, less CareShield Life payouts.

  • Early death

We compare what you leave behind (savings plus life cover, less loans and final costs) with what your partner, children and parents need.

  • Big hospital stay

A major surgery or long hospital stay. We use a S$50,000 bill and check how much your hospital plan pays.

  • Serious accident

We use S$20,000 for the ward, S$5,000 for physio and clinic visits, and 3 months of lost pay.

  • Job loss

You lose your job and need time to find a new one. We check how long your cash lasts.

  • Living to 95

You live longer than expected. We check if your money still lasts to age 95.

Why most plans only cover today

Most people buy insurance for the life they have now. Then life moves on: a partner, children, a home loan, a higher pay or parents who need support. The cover stays the same while the need grows. The simulator looks forward, year by year until age 95, so you can see the gap before it matters.

In Singapore the biggest gap is critical illness. The LIA Singapore Protection Gap Study 2022 found that working adults hold only about 2.1 times their yearly pay in critical illness cover. The MAS Basic Financial Planning Guide suggests about 4 times.

Main assumptions

  • All amounts are in Singapore dollars, in today's money.
  • Savings grow 1.5% a year above inflation. You can change this from 0% to 4%.
  • Pay and spending grow 1% a year until 55. After you stop work, you spend about 80% of what you spend today.
  • Likely lifespan is 85 for men and 88 for women. We also test living to 95.
  • Each child costs S$700 a month until 23, plus S$40,000 for university at 19.
  • Cover you are not sure about counts as zero, so you see the worst case.

How much insurance do I need in Singapore?

The MAS Basic Financial Planning Guide suggests life cover of about 9 times your yearly pay and critical illness cover of about 4 times your yearly pay. Your own need depends on your loans, savings and the people who depend on you. The simulator works out your own number from your answers.

How much life insurance coverage do I need?

A common starting point in Singapore is about 9 times your yearly pay, from the MAS Basic Financial Planning Guide. A better way is to add up what your family would need if you pass away, such as loans, children's costs until 23 and support for parents, then take away your savings. The simulator does this for you.

How much critical illness cover do I need?

The MAS Basic Financial Planning Guide suggests critical illness cover of about 4 times your yearly pay, so you can pay for treatment and live without pay for a few years. The simulator uses a S$150,000 treatment bill plus 3 years off work, then shows how much your cover pays and what is left for you to pay.

How much do I need to retire in Singapore?

MoneySense suggests planning for about two-thirds of your last pay each month after you retire, for 20 to 30 years. The simulator uses about 80% of what you spend today, adds your CPF LIFE payout from 65, and shows the age your money may run out. It also shows how much more to save each month to close the gap.

What is a protection gap?

A protection gap is the difference between the money you or your family would need if something bad happens and the money your insurance and savings would pay. The LIA Singapore Protection Gap Study 2022 found a 74% gap for critical illness and a 21% gap for death across working adults in Singapore.

How long will my money last after I retire?

It depends on your savings, your CPF LIFE payouts, your spending and how long you live. The simulator assumes you spend about 80% of today's spending after you retire, earn 1.5% a year above inflation, and live to 85 for men or 88 for women. It also tests living to 95.

How does the simulator include CPF LIFE?

If you pay CPF, you choose the Basic, Full or Enhanced Retirement Sum. The simulator then adds the CPF LIFE Standard Plan payout from age 65 published by CPF Board: about S$950, S$1,780 or S$3,440 a month. If you are not sure, it estimates a payout from your pay.

Most of my plans are already in place. Why should I check?

Many plans were bought for life as it was at the time. Marriage, children, a home loan, a pay rise or ageing parents can change what your family would need. The simulator tests future events, not just today, so you can see if your cover still fits.
